Kids/Families

Main Playground

The main playground in City Park is a vibrant, family-friendly space designed for children of all ages to climb, swing, slide, and explore. Nestled within the park’s lush greenery, the playground features a mix of traditional and modern play structures, including climbing walls, slides, and imaginative play areas that encourage creativity and active play. Its open layout allows caregivers to keep an eye on little ones while also providing shaded spots for rest and picnics. With nearby walking paths and scenic views of the park’s lakes and lawns, the playground is a central gathering spot for families looking to enjoy a fun, safe, and energetic outdoor experience.

Nature Play

Nature Play is a four-acre outdoor adventure in City Park created to inspire curiosity and exploration for visitors of all ages. Developed through a community-inspired design process, the space transforms the Museum’s award-winning Explore Colorado dioramas—found on the third floor of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science—into a real-world environment where families can explore, relax, and play together. The landscape follows Colorado’s water journey, beginning in the alpine tundra and flowing through forests and down to the prairie grasslands. Along the way, it celebrates the state’s natural environments while offering a welcoming place for hands-on, multi-sensory discovery. To make the experience even more engaging, the Museum also offers a Nature Play Scavenger Hunt to help visitors begin their adventure.

Splash Pad (Summer Only)

The water play area near the Denver Museum of Nature and Science—often called the H2Odyssey splash pad—is a popular summertime feature in City Park where kids can cool off and have fun with a variety of water jets and fountains. Situated just outside the museum grounds, this interactive splash spot provides a refreshing break during warm days and is perfect for families exploring the park after a museum visit. While it isn’t maintained by the museum itself, many local visitors enjoy stopping by the splash pad as part of their outdoor adventures in the area, especially when the weather heats up.

Picnics and Reserving Space

Picnicking in Denver’s City Park is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to spend a day outdoors. With wide open lawns, shady trees, and scenic views of the lakes and downtown skyline, the park offers plenty of beautiful spots to spread out a blanket and relax with friends or family. Whether you’re planning a casual lunch, a birthday gathering, or a larger get-together, City Park makes it easy to host a memorable picnic. The city’s online reservation system allows visitors to quickly reserve picnic sites and shelters in advance, helping ensure you have the perfect space waiting when you arrive. With convenient amenities, plenty of room to play, and some of Denver’s best park scenery, a picnic in City Park is a classic local experience.
