Story Time

StoryTimeStory Time in the Park is a tradition that was carried out by the City Park Alliance for several years. City Park Alliance is currently not continuing to put on a Story Time reading in the park.

We appreciate all of the wonderful authors, illustrators, and stories told over the years and the partnerships with with Tattered Cover Book StoreColorado Fresh Markets, and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators to provide several years of Story Time in the Park.

2016 City Park Alliance Story Time

dates are June 26, July 31, and August 28
10:30am – 11:30am
City Park Esplanade Fresh Market, Denver

Story Time is held at the City Park Esplanade Fresh Market (East Colfax Ave. and Columbine St. in front of East High). Depending on weather, the event is held either in the shade of nearby trees or in the open space of the market.

The Tattered Cover Book Store and City Park Alliance team up with Colorado Fresh Markets and The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators several Sundays in summer.  This year’s dates are June 26, July 31, and August 28.

Books are read to the young readers, signed by the authors, and then given to a lucky kiddo… Musicians and special guests also join us. Bring your own blanket and enjoy this great event at one of Denver’s best Farmers’ Market.

Although we will be giving away a copy of two books, we will also have many of their other books for sale.

Story Time also provides an opportunity for the public to interact with City Park Alliance board members to discuss what is happening in City Park as well as how to effect change.

Just three years ago, CPA modified the event from a June-only Saturday reading at the Bible House to the last Sunday of the month (May – October) at the City Park Esplanade. Our new sponsor, Fresh Markets, provided our readers with chairs, tables and tents right across East Colfax from our long-time sponsor, Tattered Cover Book Store.

Tattered Cover Bookstore has been supplying a copy of any books we read at Story Time. We then have a drawing and give any copies away, Fresh Markets has worked out great because families bike over, spread out a blanket, have a bite to eat, and do a little shopping with small businesses.

We started off in May with school year wind-down/summer start-up reading of some favorite Dr. Seuss. Moms and Dads were featured readers for May and June. June was Fire Safety month… the reading of safety-oriented books was overshadowed by a visit from the Station 15 Fire Truck “TOP RUN.” Kids just love to tour the engine.

We started back up in August with CPA Chair, Greg Davis, reading “The Lorax” and talking with kids about climate change and preserving our planet. His animated performance had the kids asking for an encore.

Then… a new and wonderful aspect was added to our Fall Story Time. We featured local authors and illustrators who read to the families and then gave away autographed copies of their books! The introduction of 3 Colorado authors and illustrators began in September, with renowned children’s and adults’ author, Linda Osmundson reading from her series “How the West Was Drawn.” Colorado Author Carmela LaVigna Coyle read her hot off the presses “The Tumbleweed Came Back.” and Colorado Illustrator Ruth Harper Johnson’s reading of “The Kissing Hand” made our final 2013 Story Time EXCEPTIONAL!

Do you think CPA should continue this GO LOCAL theme to recognize our Colorado creatives??? Let us know and mark your calendars now for the last Sunday, May through October 10:30 – 11:30 am.

Story Time is a tradition of reading in the park carried on by the City Park Alliance.  Board members and local celebrities provide an engaging story for children and children-at-heart the last Sunday of the month from May through September at 10am.

Story Time also provides an opportunity for the public to interact with City Park Alliance board members to discuss what is happening in City Park as well as how to effect change.

Story Time is held at the City Park Esplanade Fresh Market (at the junction of Colfax Ave. and Columbine St.).  Depending on weather, the event is held either in the shade of nearby trees or in the open space of the market.  Books that are read are then provided to children in the audience.  Special guests such as the Denver Fire Department have been known to show up in gear with fire trucks in tow, so check the City Park Alliance Events Calendar for information on books which will be read as well as special guest appearances.
